Guard your heart

By Sam

What does it mean to guard your heart with all diligence?

To keep your heart with all diligence. What does that really mean?

Your heart (the word here is “lêb”) is the center. This same word can be used to describe your will, your emotions, your intellect. When you “keep” it what are you doing? You are protecting it. You are maintaining it.

You are doing it DILIGENTLY. The idea there is of a prison guard. He is watching ever so closely to make sure that nothing goes awry under his care. Remember, in these ancient times, if a prison guard was to have an escape under his watch, he could either be killed by the inmates OR he could be killed as punishment for letting them escape! I googled it so you didn’t have to. The Digest of Justinian 9.4.4. Roman legal code. This explains the Philippian jailer wanting to kill himself in Acts 16:27, the guards being put to death in Acts 12:19, and the soldiers in Acts 27:42 planning to kill their prisoners to avoid execution. So we know that the word “diligence” in Proverbs 4:24 isn’t something to just gloss over. It’s a serious thing.

You and I are to guard what we allow to influence our emotions, our will, and our thoughts with EXTREME care. At times, I haven’t been the best at this. As I reflect on this verse and think critically, some things become evident. Too often the media treats our minds like shotgun targets. We are blasted with mind-numbing algorithmic slop on TikTok or Reels. We are peppered with minute-by-minute news clip coverage on X or Threads, designed to skew us, engage us, and enrage us. We are wrapped up in the lives of people we know and don’t know on FB, Instagram, TV, YouTube, etc. 92.4% of it all can be contributed to an underlying system designed to pay people to create distractions designed to keep other people (aka you) depressed or zombified, glued to the screen, either scared for your life, angry at some politician, identifying with some movement, or envying someone else. Many of us aren’t keeping our heart with all diligence.

And we see the results when the issues of our lives come pouring forth and we don’t look to God for the answers. We see the results when the issues of our lives become primarily status comparison games, depressive episodes, self-centered moanings and groanings, pet social justice causes, etc. All of it manufactured by a heart that is separated from God and set on self, drunk on the distractions. The goal for February 2026 is to spend more time reflecting on God’s Word (using posts like this to keep myself accountable), and guard my heart. I want the issues of my life that I focus on to be the issues that God has placed there. Opportunities that HE has placed on my heart to go and do. Not the distractions of this temporal world.
